Outdoor dining and display of retail goods on the footpath

The Cityof Sydney developed new policies to manage the use of public footpaths for outdoor dining and displaying retail goods.

The Outdoor Dining Policy, Guidelines and Action Plan were prepared in consultation with a range of people and aimed to:

  • simplify applications
  • extend license periods
  • set out where outdoor dining can take place
  • consider accessibility, safety and topography
  • think about the width of the footpath
  • how many pedestrians are using the area.

A key consideration was the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the impact obstacles on the footpath can have for people with a vision or mobility impairment. The Outdoor Dining Policy proposes a consistent and clear path of travel must be provided and maintained at all times along each street block. The draft guidelines provide flexibility to address everyone’s needs.

The public exhibition has closed and after considering the submissions Council approved the Outdoor Dining policy on 17 October 2016.

The Local Approvals Policy for the Displays of Goods on the Footway which details standards for displays on footways will be on public exhibition following Gateway approval from 9 January 2017 to 14 February 2017.
