Transforming George Street

Transforming George Street

Australia’s global City, Sydney, deserves a world-class main street.  The City is working with the State Government to bring light rail to George Street, including pedestrianised sections between Bathurst Street and Hunter Street. This would create a safe and vibrant space for walking, light rail and business.

To get involved with the transformation of Sydney's main street visit the Transforming George Street page, where you can:

Have Your Say on Fitzroy Gardens Playgrounds Before Sunday 20th May 2012!

Have you had your say on the City's plans to renew the Fitzroy Gardens Playground yet? If not, now's your chance! The first phase of consultation will end at 5pm, Sunday 20th May 2012, so follow the link to fill out our online survey or fill out our comments form.

After the 20th we will be looking at all of your ideas, along with our site analysis and feasibility studies, in order to create a concept design. We will be bringing this back for community comment in mid July - so stay tuned for updates and opportunities to have your say.

In the meantime, there are other consultations coming up for Kings Cross locals and visitors, so keep checking this website to find out how you can be involved.

Work With Us on Late Night Kings Cross

Are you passionate about Kings Cross? We invite you to work with us on improving the area at night. We have a community workshop on Tuesday 5 June 2012, 6-8:30pm, at the Rex Centre, 58A Macleay St, Kings Cross. We will be talking about issues such as transport, safety for all and compliance of licensed venues.

St James Park and John Street Reserve Glebe.

St James Park and John Street Reserve Glebe.

The City of Sydney is planning to renew St James Park and John Street Reserve Glebe to better connect the two spaces and provide improved grass areas, native habitat and new play equipment.

Council endorsed concept design plans for the parks on 5 December last year subject to further consultation with residents. You can see the designs at http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/Council/documents/meetings/2011/Committee/Environment/281111/111128_EHC_ITEM09_ATTACHMENTB.PDF

Next month, City staff will door-knock residents surrounding the parks to get your comments and suggestions on the design. We will also have a survey for you to complete online. This will be live soon.

Proposal to name Walsh Bay a Sydney suburb

Proposal to name Walsh Bay a Sydney suburb

The City of Sydney is proposing to rename parts of Dawes Point and Millers Point as a new suburb of Sydney named Walsh Bay.

The proposal is in response to a request by the Walsh Bay Precinct Association Incorporated, which represents all strata owners (residential, cultural and commercial) in the Walsh Bay area.

The naming will help promote the historical and cultural benefits of Walsh Bay to visitors and residents. It is also expected to provide more clarity to essential emergency services and taxi, courier, mapping, utility and postal services.

We invite your feedback on this proposal which is currently on Public Exhibition. Submissions should be made in writing by 5pm on Wednesday 30 May 2012.

Bourke Road Cycleway: Review of Environmental Factors

In March 2010, the City of Sydney opened the Bourke Road cycleway, a separated onroad cycleway along parts of Bourke Road, Mandible and Bowden Streets. The cycleway was proposed to provide cyclists with a connection from southern Alexandria to Green Square, and from Green Square to the Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.

The Bourke Road Cycleway Review of Environmental Factors, is currently on public exhibition and is available to download here.

If you would like to make comments in relation to this report and in particular the recommended mitigation measures then please provide your feedback by the close of business on Monday 14 May 2012.

We invite you to explore the possibilities on our walking tour of the playgrounds of Erskineville. Bring the whole family - the kids can have fun trying out new equipment and you can see the kinds of experiences the City has provided in other areas.

Place: Meet us at the Flora and Knight Reserve, Flora Street Erskineville.

George Street, Redfern cycleway

George Street, Redfern cycleway

The City’s Cycle Strategy and Action Plan 2007-2017 aims to provide a safe and convenient bicycle network, to connect neighbouring Council areas and other bicycle networks. As part of this network, the City is proposing a new bi-directional separated cycleway on George Street in Redfern; and in Allen Street, Mandible Street and Short Street in Waterloo. To see the plans here.

The City is holding a number of information sessions through the month of April to give members of the community the opportunity to discuss the proposed plans with the City’s project and design managers.

Childcare for East Sydney

Childcare for East Sydney

To help meet the increasing need for childcare in East Sydney, the City of Sydney has purchased 277 Bourke Street, Darlinghurst and proposes to convert two floors into a not-for-profit long-day childcare centre. The building is situated across Berwick Lane from the John Birt Memorial Playground. This enclosed playground is currently used by Frances Newton Preschool and would provide the outdoor playspace for the proposed new centre.

Where do Kings Cross, Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay kids go to play? Fitzroy Gardens playground, that's where! The City is catering for the growing number of families in the area by making this key outdoor playspace better.

We invite you to be part of the consultation process for a new and improved Fitzroy Gardens playground. We have an online survey  and comments form (click here), and we will be coming to the playground soon to talk to the children who use the playground.
