Green Square Naming Proposal

Consultation has concluded

Thanks to everyone for the feedback on Sydney Your Say about the Green Square naming proposal. There were three options to be considered which were:

Option 1: No change - The town centre land remains within Zetland and Alexandria and no new name is adopted.

Option 2: A new suburb - The Green Square town centre becomes a suburb called ‘Green Square.

Option 3: An urban place - A new urban place will be created known as ‘Green Square’. There would be no formal boundary. The name would be used in a similar way to other urban places such as Chinatown.

Feedback from the community showed that most people preferred the name Green Square to be used as an urban place a bit like China Town, rather than the name of a suburb, as with Haymarket. City staff submitted a report to Council recommending this option based on community feedback for an urban place. The Report to Council, and Appendix detailing community feedback can be seen here

Council voted against this recommendation, supporting instead the option of creating a new suburb called ‘Green Square’. Based on Council’s vote, a proposal for a new suburb has been sent to the Geographical Names Board of NSW to consider. The final decision rests with the Geographical Names Board and we await their response.
