Accessible Public Toilets

The City's Public Toilet Strategy was endorsed in April 2014 and aims to improve the availability and access to public toilets for everyone. The strategy recommends projects and programs for the City to increase accessible public toilet facilities including the installation of new Automated Public Toilets (APT's) at locations of high demand.

We will be seeking stakeholder and community feedback to help us assess the proposed locations and the types of facilities that will best address community needs.

Automated Public Toilets (APT's)
We have been undertaking studies and consultation to determine the best sites for high demand locations.

Further community consultation is scheduled for early 2016. The first locations to see community feedback are the corner of Darlinghurst and Bayswater Roads, Kings Cross and the corner of William and Oxfords Streets, Paddington.

Other sites under consideration:
  • East Sydney; and
  • Newtown.
Retractable Urinals
We are also investigating the installation of retractable public urinals to enhance public amenities.

Our intention is to service high-demand areas and contribute to the late night entertainment precincts. A report went to Council in August suggesting a pop-up toilet at Springfield Plaza in Kings Cross. The outcome was to consider locating the urinal in Darlinghurst.

How it works:
The retractable urinal (Pop-up urinal) would be activated and raised above the ground only during periods of high demand on weekend nights and public holidays from 10pm until 5am. At other times it remains underground.

These projects also include installing the successful temporary outdoor urinals the City has installed previously at popular night time entertainment precincts, including George Street, Oxford Street and Kings Cross.
