The City of Sydney wants to create a vibrant nightlife offering something for everyone. You should have choices if you are heading out at night – from a street bar with live music, to a night club to an inspiring art exhibition or bookshop.

We will use feedback from our consultation and the best available research to develop a new night time city policy. This policy will outline a vision for how the night time economy should function over the next 20 years.

The policy is also focused on broader strategic issues for Sydney at night. Specific issues such as trading hours, and planning will be explored as an outcome of the policy. An outline of what the Policy will – and will not – cover is available here.

The timeline for developing the policy is: July - September: Analyse community ideas and other research. Produce a Discussion Paper capturing this information; October - November: Seek community feedback on the Discussion Paper; February 2012: The Draft Policy, which is informed by the Discussion Paper, goes to Council. The community will then be consulted before the Final Policy is adopted. A progress report is available here.
