Newcombe Street upgrades, Paddington

The City of Sydney has started early works to upgrade Newcombe Street, Paddington.

The upgrade includes reopening vehicle access at the intersection with Oxford Street and closing the southern end to create a new public plaza. This means the northern end of Newcombe Street is set to become a slow-speed street, providing access from Oxford Street to a new development at 1 Newcombe Street and to the existing private laneway.

As part of the early works, our contractors removed nine trees to install the first stage of a new stormwater system.

Our work improves public space and accommodates an approved development at 1 Newcombe Street.

The new design includes:

  • new pavers;
  • jacaranda trees and other plants;
  • a grassed area; and
  • space for stalls as part of Paddington Markets.

We have detailed the sequence for the construction works and expect early works to be completed by April 2016.

The reclassification of the 1A Newcombe Street from ‘community’ to ‘operational’ land was approved.
