The City of Sydney is continuing with plans to revitalise Portman Lane, Navins Lane and Merton Street (south of Portman Street) and create a shared zone with a reduced 10 km/h speed limit. This will increase safety for all who use the lane.

The Local Pedestrian, Cycling and Traffic Calming Committee considered the proposal at its meeting on Wednesday 15 February 2017 and endorsed the shared zone.

At this meeting, the City received a petition signed by Portman Street residents, requesting that Portman Lane, Navins Lane and Merton Street remain two-way.

The City and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) considered this request but remain concerned that vehicles will travel faster, particularly downhill, within a two way system, which may pose a safety risk for pedestrians. Also taking into account the narrow width of Portman Lane, and the volume of people expected to use the lanes, the City and RMS are of the view the design should be one-way to ensure the safety of all users.

It is therefore recommended the planned shared zone be one-way, except for the southern end of Portman Lane, which would remain two-way. This proposal will be considered by the Planning and Development Committee on Monday 20 March and Council on 27 March 2017.

In response to feedback from residents, the City will implement two-hour restricted permit parking for three car spaces in Merton Street, south of Portman Street. We will do this as part of the upgrade works.

New pedestrian entry points to the Green Square town centre have recently opened, including the stairs at the end of Merton Street down to Barker Street, and the ramp from Portman Lane to Tweed Place.
We expect to start the upgrade works in April and they are expected to take six weeks to complete, depending on the weather.

We will notify residents before works start. For more information about this project, please contact Adam McInnes on 02 9265 9333 or email amcinnes@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au

The Green Square town centre really started to take shape in 2016, along with new facilities, parks and developments around the wider area.

Highlights have included the launch of the colourful Wulaba Park in April 2016, along with our welcome party for new residents. We spoke to hundreds of residents at our Have Your Say day in May, and the open day at the Green Square Community and Cultural precinct in July gave everyone a great "behind the scenes" look into the progress at the former South Sydney Hospital site. See the photos on this page.

Residents have provided feedback on plans for new streets and open space, including Garraway Park in Rosebery, a small park at 904 Bourke Street, a new park at North Rosebery, and important projects including the upgrade of Joynton Avenue, and the Green Square to Randwick cycleway.

Members of our Construction Liaison Group for the Green Square Town Centre – North, have given up their time to give us valuable feedback on the impacts of construction in the area so that the City and developers can resolve these as quickly as possible. You can see construction updates on this page or the City's Green Square web pages.

As a result of community feedback, we have increased our parking patrols and cleansing services around the town centre construction sites.

There will be new opportunities to participate in these groups in 2017, as more private development commences, and the City commences work on the Drying Green, Gunyama Park Aquatic Recreation Centre and Gunyama Park.
