    More News On The Project:

Council adopted a resolution on Monday night (30th July 2012) relating to the development of the playground design. You can access the resolution here.

Below is some additional information that may be useful when interpreting the draft concept design:

History of the Playground in Fitzroy Gardens:

The history of Fitzroy Gardens is being carefully considered in the design of the new playground and a Heritage Impact Statement will be prepared for the developed design.

A comprehensive heritage assessment of Fitzroy Gardens and Lawrence Hargrave Reserve was carried out in 2010. This report is available here. This report reveals that the current site of the children's playground was identified for this use in the first plans of 1939, predating the 1970 redesign of the Gardens by Ilmars Berzins.

The size of the current playground is 140sqm, only about half the size it was during the 1960s and 70s.

The current proposed concept design increases the size of the playground to 470sqm by incorporating the adjacent paved space and concrete steps.

All elements associated with the Ilmars Berzins design of Fitzroy Gardens will be retained and no trees will be removed as part of the playground upgrade. The proposed concept design includes more planting (as well as more seating). Please see the the scoping report for more information on the development of the proposed concept design.

    Safety:

Safety-by-design principals are a key consideration in the concept design. It is proposed that the new playground be fully enclosed by fencing and raised garden beds. Lighting, sightlines and passive surveillance are being carefully considered.

  • Phase 2 is Launched!

    Open-uri20140424-15790-1w781pb?1398263451

The City has had a great response to Phase 1 of community consultation for the renewal of the Fitzroy Gardens Playground - 63 people took our survey, 44 submitted comments forms, 1 person phoned in and 40 kindergarten students at Darlinghurst Public School participated in the school-based consultation activity.

Results showed that the playground is well used and highly valued by local families. It is a key play facility for local children and its central location means that it is an important meeting place for parents and carers, helping them to form friendships and maintain the strong sense of community that can be found amongst families in the area.

There is very strong support the City’s renewal of the playground, with clear demand for a bigger play space with high quality equipment that creates opportunities for a wide range of play experiences. We invite you to have a look at the consultation report for a deeper understanding of the outcomes.

In the meantime we would like to thank everyone who contributed. We have used your feedback, along with technical and feasibility studies to create a concept design. We now invite you to give us your thoughts and responses to this via our feedback form.

Or you can drop in to our stall at the Kings Cross Organic Markets, Saturday 28th July 2012 from 8am-2pm. The project team will be there to discuss the design and answer your questions. We will also have feedback forms for you to fill in and craft activities for the kids.

Phase 2 of consultation will close on the 17th August 2012.

If you would like more information on the project please contact Kristin Gabriel, Community Engagement Coordinator ph: 9246 7398 or kgabriel@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au
